Glossary
What is Source Code?
Source Code is the human-readable instructions that a programmer writes to create a software application. It consists of statements written in a programming language (like JavaScript, Python, or Java) that describe exactly what the computer should do. Source code is compiled or interpreted into machine-readable instructions that computers can execute.
For B2B SaaS companies, managing and organizing source code is critical for development efficiency, quality, and security.
- Version Control: Modern development teams use version control systems (Git) to track changes to source code, enabling collaboration, rollback of bad changes, and branching for feature development.
- Code Quality: Well-organized, readable source code is easier to maintain and less buggy. Poor source code quality slows development and introduces bugs. Practices like code reviews, automated testing, and linting improve code quality.
- Security: Source code should never be publicly exposed because it can reveal security vulnerabilities, database schemas, and API keys. Open-source projects intentionally release source code, but proprietary SaaS applications keep source code private.
Example from Flowtrix Projects
For an enterprise SaaS company with disorganized source code and no version control, implementing Git-based version control and establishing code review processes reduced bugs reaching production by 80%. Additionally, developers could now understand and modify code more efficiently, reducing development time by 30%.
