What is an IP Address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) Address is a unique string of numbers (or alphanumeric characters in IPv6) separated by periods that identifies a specific device or server on the internet or a local network. Just like a physical street address allows the postal service to deliver a package to your house, an IP address allows computers to send and receive data to the correct destination.
Why IP Addresses Matter in Web Launches and Security?
Understanding IP addresses is fundamental to server management, DNS routing, and enterprise security.
- DNS and Domains: When you launch a website, you must configure the Domain Name System (DNS). You point your domain's "A Record" to the specific IP address of the server hosting your Webflow site, telling the internet where your site lives.
- Security & Firewalls: Enterprise SaaS platforms use IP addresses to block malicious traffic. If a specific IP address attempts thousands of fake logins (a brute force attack), the firewall can ban that IP entirely.
- Geolocation: IP addresses reveal the geographic location of a user. B2B marketers use this to dynamically change website content (e.g., showing pricing in Euros vs. Dollars, or routing users to region-specific legal terms).
- Internal Testing: Developers can restrict access to a staging website so it is only viewable by people browsing from the company's internal office IP address.
