What is a Zone Record (DNS Zone File)?

A Zone Record (or DNS Zone File) is a simple text file stored on a DNS name server that contains the actual mappings between domain names and IP addresses, as well as other critical routing instructions for a domain. It is essentially the master ledger that dictates exactly where web traffic, email traffic, and subdomains should be sent when someone interacts with your company's domain.

Why Zone Records Matter in Enterprise Web Launches ?

Mishandling Zone Records during a website migration is the fastest way to cause a catastrophic, company-wide IT blackout.

  • A Records (Address): This record points your root domain (flowtrix.co) directly to the specific IP address of your Webflow Enterprise server.
  • CNAME Records (Canonical Name): This record aliases one name to another. It is used to point the www version of your site to the root domain, ensuring users reach the site regardless of how they type the URL.
  • MX Records (Mail Exchange): These records explicitly tell the internet where to route the company's incoming emails (e.g., to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365). Deleting this during a web launch will instantly break corporate email.
  • TXT Records: Used heavily for security and verification, such as verifying domain ownership for Google Search Console, or setting up SPF/DKIM records to ensure your marketing emails don't land in spam folders.

Example from Flowtrix Projects

The technical launch is where Flowtrix proves its Enterprise capability. When we migrate a massive B2B site to Webflow, we take complete ownership of the DNS switch. Our IT specialists meticulously audit the client's existing Zone Records. We precisely update the A and CNAME records to route web traffic to Webflow's ultra-fast AWS servers, while strictly preserving the existing MX and TXT records to ensure zero disruption to corporate communications.
