What is Anchor Text?

Anchor Text is the clickable text inside a hyperlink. It is typically blue and underlined. Anchor text is one of the most important ranking factors because it tells search engines what the linked page is about. Using descriptive anchor text that includes relevant keywords helps search engines understand the context and relevance of the linked page.

Anchor text is critical for both external link building and internal linking strategies in B2B SaaS SEO.

  • Keyword Relevance: If you want to rank for "enterprise CRM software," seek backlinks with anchor text containing "enterprise CRM software" or similar variations. A backlink from authoritative sites with weak anchor text like "click here" has much less SEO value.
  • Natural Linking Patterns: Google's algorithms detect unnatural linking patterns. If all your backlinks have the same anchor text, it looks like you're manipulating rankings. A natural linking profile includes a mix of anchor text types: branded (your company name), naked URLs, generic ("click here"), and exact-match keywords.
  • Internal Linking Strategy: For internal links, use descriptive anchor text that includes keywords you want to rank for. When linking from your homepage to your /enterprise-crm-solutions/ page, use anchor text like "Enterprise CRM Solutions" rather than "Learn More."

Example from Flowtrix Projects

For an enterprise SaaS client, we audited their internal linking structure and found that most internal links used generic anchor text like "Click here" or "Read more." We optimized internal link anchor text to be descriptive and keyword-rich. Additionally, we worked with their PR team to earn backlinks from industry publications, ensuring anchor text included their target keywords. These two changes improved their keyword rankings by an average of 3 positions within 2 months.
