What is a Burger Menu?
The Burger Menu (or Hamburger Menu) is an iconic user interface element consisting of three parallel horizontal lines (☰) used to represent a hidden navigation menu. Clicking or tapping the icon typically triggers a slide-out drawer, a full-screen overlay, or a dropdown containing the site's primary links. It has become the universal standard for hiding complex navigation on smaller screens.
Why the Burger Menu Matters in Responsive Design?
The burger menu solves the fundamental problem of screen real estate on mobile devices.
- Space Conservation: On a mobile phone, a traditional horizontal navbar with 6-8 links is impossible to display. The burger menu neatly tucks these away, leaving the Header clean for the company logo and a primary Call to Action.
- Universal Recognition: Because it is used by almost every major app and website globally, users instantly recognize its function, reducing cognitive load.
- Focused Interactions: By hiding secondary links, it forces the user to focus on the content immediately presented on the page, minimizing distractions until navigation is explicitly needed.
- Scalability for Mega Menus: For enterprise sites with dozens of sub-pages, the burger menu can trigger a massive, categorized "Mega Menu" overlay that provides organized access to the entire site map on desktop as well.
